Since 1994, the Wertheim Refuge has been managed by Patricia
Martinkovic, as one of the nine national refuges she oversees
as Manager of the Long Island National Wildlife Complex.
Wertheim is the headquarters for the entire complex, and two
of Martinkovic's goals are to make more people aware of this
treasure that straddles the Carmans River in Shirley,
Southaven and Brookhaven, and to help them recognize the
Refuge as a good neighbor.

These
were the ideals that propelled Martinkovic and her staff to reach
out to Long Islanders who share a love for our natural environment
and to invite them to form a friends group for the Wertheim Refuge.
Since our first meeting in July 1998, we have written a mission
statement and bylaws, become incorporated and elected a Board of
Directors. Now we invite everyone to join us in our exciting journey
toward fulfilling our mission.
As
part of our mission, Friends of Wertheim supports the primary purposes
of the Wertheim Refuge: for use as an inviolate sanctuary for migratory
birds, for the protection and enhancement of natural resources and
for the conservation of endangered and/or threatened species.
Also
part of the Friends' mission is to support wildlife-dependent recreational
and educational activities that enhance and further the primary
purpose of the Wertheim Refuge. Another, equally important part
of our mission, is to foster cooperative and mutually productive
relationships between the Refuge and adjacent communities.
The
Friends of Wertheim have much to do, and we encourage everyone to
join us. One-year membership is only $10 and $15 for a family.
