Wertheim is the 2nd largest of the nine Refuges in the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex and serves as the headquarters of the Complex?  (Oyster Bay being the largest at 3,209 acres.)

Maurice and Cecile Wertheim donated the initial 1,800 acres to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in 1947?  Since then, with additional land donations and purchases, the Refuge has expanded to 2,550 acres.  (The most recent acquisitions, Southaven Property, added 128 acres in October, 1998.)

Dennis and Betty Puleston were named honorary members of FOW for their roles in creating the current Refuge? As a well-known naturalist and friend of the Wertheims, Dennis Puleston had some influence on their decision to donate their property.  Betty Puleston and her family donated may acres to the Refuge.

Art Cooley was named an honorary FOW member because of his leadership in having the Carmans River named a New York State Wild, Scenic and Recreational River, assuring its enduring protection?

Art and Dennis were founding members of the Environmental Defense Fund?

Dennis, who is also a renowned wildlife artist, painted the osprey used in the FOW logo?
